Academics express fear of rising tide of racism in australia

Updated

Police in Australia say more racial hate crimes were reported after the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville on Saturday.

Key points: Protesters clash near Charlottesville park

No deaths or serious injuries reported

The rally was declared illegal by Virginia authorities

Counter-protests started after the white nationalist rally was declared unlawful

A demonstration in Melbourne resulted in 20 arrests, which included police, at least one charge of disturbing the peace.

A man was assaulted outside an Antipodean pub and two men faced charges of public disorder after a rally began at Charlottesville's Unite the Right Festival, organisers said.

The white nationalist rally was declared unlawful by Virginia authorities after the "Unite the Right" rally was declared illegal.

It is understood counter-protesters were outnumbered by the white supremacists.

More than 100 people were arrested across the city, which has seen several large-scale clashes between white supremacists, anti-fascist protesters and counter-protesters.

About 40 of them were arrested before the Unite the Right rally began, around 7:00am local time (02:00 GMT) Saturday, police said.

One of those arrested was a man wearing a white T-shirt that read "white power only."

Police spokeswoman Danielle Smith said the protester charged at police before being punched in the face.

The attack left police and protesters "on the ground and possibly on the streets" at one point, she said.

She would not confirm whether the man was hurt.

A crowd of more than 2,000 counter-protesters also converged in Charlottesville, chanting "black lives matter", while the National Park Service said it was monitoring the situation closely.

Central qld tourists urged to visit smaller towns

Updated

One of the largest communities in Qld has urged tourists to visit the smaller towns instead as Queensland's winter comes to an end.

The City of Brisbane's annual tourism report warned visitors to the Sunshine State were encouraged to check out smaller towns across Queensland during the months ahead.

The report, compiled by Tourism Queensland for the Queensland Government, warned people living in the Sunshine Coast region should look into smaller towns like Ayr, Bribie, Coorparoo, East Dandenong, Fortitude Valley, Glenelg and Invercargill.

Tourism Queensland said there are now only about 10 Queensland towns and cities that can hold onto top spot.

It said Qld's biggest towns, the largest were Invercargill with its 12 townships, and Fortitude Valley with its 8 townships.

"While it is true these towns are not among the largest, it is our preference for them when it comes to holding onto the crown," Mr Hunt said.

Queensland State Government Tourism Director Michael Wilson said people could not just visit towns on their own for a holiday but needed to see the town.

"You've got to come in, get to know the people in the town... they're the ones that decide what people get around them, what they're going to eat, what they're going to see, where they're going to go, so you've got to connect them with the city and make them really welcome, we think," he said.

"If you want to visit some of the bigger towns in Queensland you've got to understand the cultural and business context of the town, know the history of the town and understand how the economy and tourism is really put together there.

"They're not just for holidaying, they're the things of legends and legends are important to the people of Qld."

Tourism Queensland spokesman Brian O'Loughlin said while there is a small city, in particular Port Pirie, in Queensland's far north Queensland town, there are smaller towns like Port Coonamble, Port Stephens and the Blue Mountains.

"With the smaller towns it's easier just to see them than trying to go visit a bigger town or big city," he said.

"There is only just one city and that is Port Pirie itself, so it's like every single place in the southern and northern regions of Queensland is smaller.

"And then there are some places like Port Stephens, which is a bit small, but people really enjoy going to that town.

"You've got to walk down the street and you've got to just go there for yourself."
