The drum wednesday march 26th 2017

We're taking a break for a bit and I'm really excited to announce that we're going to hold a drum march on our 25th anniversary!

This has been an interesting project which has taken many years to get off the ground and now I'll be turning to the public for help.

The march will take place the 25th January and it will be part of the March for Science and Arts in Bristol organised by our sister organisation the Society for the Prevention and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

Our march will be in support of the SPCA march for animals as well as our own marches for animals this year.

The march will start at a park in the heart of Bristol where we'll be marching in our traditional way. If you're a march person with children you can come along and share a laugh! I'm hoping to see as many children and adults as possible!

Some beachgoers say it's not enough to score on a one to 10 scale or be praised by a few local commissioners and city leaders.

"To win a state's beach game, your beaches have to be beautiful and pristine," said Bob Hall, president of the San Diego Coastal Council and a co-chair of the San Diego Natural Bridges Coalition, who was not part of the panel.

The panel is also expected to give final grades to some beaches that didn't receive the top score but still received enough votes to win the game.

A final score and state ranking will be released Friday in a report to the State Council of the National Recreation and Park Association, which is sponsoring the statewide competition.

In addition to the top beach, finalists will win more than $45,000 in prizes for a $100,000 beach restoration project.

The winners will be announced this fall. If all 50 finalists are selected, the panel will assign a state, with the city of Santa Barbara as the county's top choice. Each county will then be able to select its own state winner.

San Diego voters approved an expansion of its beach park last year. The Santa Barbara Coast Park opened for regular use in July 2016 and now includes 22 additional trails, a playground, and a beach café. A portion of the $100 million park expansion, in the form of a $14 million levee improvement to Santa Barbara Bay, will continue through at least 2019.

Business chamber backs industry water conservation bill

SANTA ANA — An attorney general's group said Tuesday that its support for an industry-backed bill to require water quality testing for industry has been endorsed by a large number of industries, including California's largest manufacturers of consumer goods, as well as environmental groups.

The Independent Group of California Water Resources, which represents approximately 830,000 customers in California's four largest cities, voted Tuesday to join the coalition on the proposal.

The group was created to combat the threat of pollution and economic hardship caused by the industrialization and growth of urban areas, said Kevin Kollmeyer, spokesman for the group.

"The industry is already engaged in many of these activities, from industrial water quality testing to residential and commercial water treatment plants, from chemical processing plants to agricultural businesses," he said.

"But what we're trying to do is take it to a high level that it's not just another industry issue," Kollmeyer said.

The industry had opposed a bill recently introduced by Assemblywoman Jackie Speier (D-Rancho Cordova) that would have required companies doing business in California to apply for permits to conduct a standard laboratory test for chemicals, Kollmeyer said.

Speier's bill did not include any requirement of testing for industrial or industrial wastewater — an important distinction because both types of wastewater are used for purposes like animal growth and crop production, the bill's author, Speier spokeswoman Susan Peeples, said.

Industrial water quality testing requires companies to test water to detect levels that can affect human health, safety and welfare. Speier's bill required businesses to also perform a lab test every three months.

The Independent Group also supported the proposal by the California Water Resources Control Board, Kollmeyer said. But because the group has an advisory board, it does not necessarily have the same influence as other environmental groups, he said.

Spokane attorney Richard Dutton said the water and waste management industry was "vigorously involved in this legislation for years and they were happy to help."

The Independent Group, a not-for-profit advocacy group, will continue its public lobbying efforts to ensure that such regulation is in place, said Bill Kollmeyer, Kollmeyer's spokesman.

But, he said, the legislation has the potential to affect many industries, including the water business.

"Some companies do not want to be regulated and they want their facilities to be operated as they were at the time they first began using the water," he said. "But over time they can become more efficient, can use less water, but their costs per unit of water they consume have increased....
