Tfga welcomes dairy poll result

The Dairy Farmers of Australia has welcomed a survey that found nearly half of its members believe dairy products are not properly labeled.

The survey, carried out by Fairfax, surveyed 1,200 dairy owners across the nation with a goal to gather the views of 2,000 dairy owners across the country in April.

Some 65 per cent of dairy owners said they would not carry dairy products under any circumstance.

The group said it welcomed the results that confirmed the dairy industry was struggling with marketing.

"Despite the strong positive message, we remain concerned that dairy has not yet been adequately marketed to the broader community," the Dairy Farmers of Australia wrote in the news release.

"Whilst dairy has always been of public health significance, the industry has been under constant pressure to focus on profitability and maintain market share."

The group noted its support for the Australian flag and the G20 in general and said it also supported initiatives around animal welfare and animal welfare reform.

It also noted the survey showed there had been a 20 per cent increase in dairy farm visits from 2002 to 2014.

"Dairy is one of our country's key export industries, which is why we have strong investment into education and training opportunities for dairy farmers, our national park system, and our government-funded research to inform and educate Australians on the environmental impact of dairy production," the group said.

"The dairy industry's strength is the quality of the product delivered and the commitment of dairy owners, staff and members to supporting the industry's efforts."

Australian dairy products still under pressure to sell through

It also said its membership had to be open to the public as this would not be possible without the "integrity" of its membership.

But the organisation is concerned that milk and dairy products are under pressure to sell through within Australian supermarkets, particularly in some supermarkets which don't have as much choice of products to choose from.

The group said it was concerned about the dairy supply chain and urged the Government to set up a new national national board in line with a 2012 report from the Australian Farm Service Agency to oversee dairy and milk industry, and set up a new "pork export board".

The Dairy Farmers also said dairy farmers faced significant difficulties as the market for local milk had been reduced from 40 per cent of the market to 26 per cent after it was introduced.

The group recommended that the dairy industry's "pilot projects" to provide education and training would be able to support the creation of the new, national, agency.

Housing act to audit waiting list for first homes for homeless, disabled

LAKELAND, Fla. - Nearly four months before the state housing authority launched its Homeless Resettlement program, the authority also announced a series of plans aimed at providing homeless New Yorkers with housing.

The program -- which begins Saturday to help New Yorkers who are homeless, blind, and mentally ill -- will be implemented across the state through the Housing First program.

The Housing First program, known as Rikers Island, is the first in the nation, after the federal program, to include homeless New Yorkers.

Under Rikers Island, New Yorkers who are homeless and mentally ill will receive assistance with living expenses and housing assistance.

The Housing First program will expand upon the existing programs in five boroughs: Wallingford, Bridgeport, Tompkinsville, Newburgh and Elmira.

The Housing First program is currently funded through a five-year state budget, which begins in July 2016. Housing First has been in effect since 2008.

As previously reported, more than 2,400 New Yorkers, including 1,600 people with severe mental illness, are currently living in the system.

The Housing First program will begin in the New York City and Brooklyn area, with the rest being delivered nationwide.

In the program, eligible homeless New Yorkers will be matched with an employment placement program, assisted by a professional-staffed Housing First team that will be trained in the process and available 24/7 to provide housing, employment placement and housing services to the eligible homeless New Yorkers.

"Housing First will help provide New Yorkers access to essential housing services that will help them meet their needs while also improving their safety and quality of life," said state Housing Commissioner Steve Antonetti.

The Housing First team includes residents with severe mental illness, as well as the State's most vulnerable clients.

"Over 10 percent of New York City's homeless population is chronically homeless or at significant risk of homelessness," New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio stated in a statement. "The city is determined to end chronic homelessness and make New Yorkers whole. We are working on a plan that can accomplish this goal."
